Heroic dog protects his injured mother

May 14, 2009 - Mother Dog was Hit By Car so Son Dog Protects & Saves Her Life!! This happened in Bronx, NY - Just before 6:30 a.m. a 9-year-old female yellow lab chow mix ran onto the Major Deegan Expressway and was hit by a car at exit 3. That's when another dog, her son, ran to the rescue, right there on the busy highway. The dog wouldn't let anyone near, barking at traffic and police officers, even as they tried to help.
.
Dogs are known for their loyalty toward their owners, but a dog in New York City took it to another level on Thursday.
Police arrived to tend to an injured dog in the middle of a busy road, but another dog would not allow them near the animal.
The dog was hit by a car during rush hour and suffered a broken leg.
The injured dog's son bravely stayed in the middle of the road and protected his mother by keeping cars away.
Officers were eventually able to retrieve the injured animal and transport her to a vet.
When police got the injured dog into a cruiser, the other dog ran along next the vehicle. Officials say both dogs are okay and belong to the same owner.

Pair of kittens chases 200-pound bear up a tree

A 6-foot, 200-pound bear has been perched high above a Central Florida neighborhood for hours on Friday after it was chased up a tree by 6-month-old kittens.
"(The bear) was out looking for a place to live and got startled and took refuge in the tree," Florida Fish and Wildlife worker Tom Shupe said.

"(The kittens) had the bear just cornered at the fence and it saw the tree and just ran up the tree and has been there ever since," homeowner Jason Daniels said.
Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have been called to the scene to determine what to do with the bear, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Alien Images Appear On Wall In Western Canada

Some Believe Images Are Just Reflection From Window
.
CALGARY, Alberta -- Some believe aliens have landed in western Canada after seeing strange reflections appear almost nightly on the wall of a Calgary home.
"I looked out and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, I've lost my mind,'" resident Karen Henuset said of the first time she saw the specters. "So I asked our nanny to come and take a look at this, and the hair on her arms just stood straight up."

It's as "clear as day. You see two eyes on each of them; they both have this little thing over their head. It's a little weird," said resident Reid Henuset.

A neighbor said he believes the image is a reflection off of a window. And it only happens every afternoon between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The only sure way the image goes away -- clouds.

Although some adults may be skeptics, ask the neighborhood kids what they think and the answer is unanimous.

"There's aliens, real-life aliens on a wall," one unidentified girl said. "No one believes us."

Alien Images Appear on Canadian Home The image looks like the heads of two aliens. "Clear as day, you see two eyes on each of them, they both have this little thing over their head, it's a little weird," said Reid. Most everyone believes the images are not real aliens but the sun's reflection off a nearby window. The images show up daily in the late afternoon unless there are clouds.

Bucky won't leave home

A Florida man who made a deer his pet is being pressured to set it free because it is against the state's law to keep the animal.
Deer hunter Lee Powell never expected to fall in love with a deer, but that's exactly what happened. "I love that rascal," Powell said about his pet deer Bucky. "His mama was lying along the roadside dead. I seen something moving and this little fella was lying right beside her," Powell remembered.
Even though the community treats Bucky like a star, at least one neighbor wasn't a fan. They reported Bucky to Florida Fish and Wildlife, who informed the Powells they were breaking state law.
But state law says that citizens can't buy a permit to have deer as pets and cannot transport wild animals, so the gates at the Powell home must be kept open for Bucky to roam free. That is what he's been doing for five weeks, but he always comes home.

Hole-in-the-heart Leo has school lunch for first time

Five-year-old Leo Coning tucks into a school lunch - for the first time in his life.

Until now, Leo had to be fed by a pump directly into his stomach because of a hole in his heart. But a massive response to an appeal for help to pay for specialist treatment means the youngster can now enjoy his food like any other little boy.

Local people and organizations responded in force when Leo's parents, Nick and Mel Coning, found themselves having to raise £8,000 in six weeks to enable him to have the specialist treatment at a clinic in Austria.

Within a month, the fund had reached £24,000 which has not only enabled Leo to have his treatment, will potentially help other children with the same complaint but said Nick, a Ryedale police officer.

"The transformation in Leo has been unbelievable," he said, following the treatment at the hands of Professor Marguerite Dunitz, a world specialist in eating problems in children.

Leo is now on special high-calorie food, but is able to take a packed lunch to school. Until now, said Nick, teaching staff had to help feed him with a pump. "A lot has changed in our lives as a result of Leo's treatment, and we are eternally grateful to the thousands of people who have supported our appeal."

Dog takes truck for a joy ride.

Police say Charles McCowan parked his pickup truck in front of an Azusa mini-mart Wednesday, leaving his 80-pound Boxer named Max in the passenger seat. When he came out, the truck and Max were gone. McCowan called police, assuming it had been stolen. When officers arrived, they found the truck across the street in a fast-food parking lot, but had no idea how it got there.
.
.
In security video the truck can be seen rolling backward out of the store lot across the street, threading its way through five lanes of traffic. Police say after McCowan left the truck, Max knocked the vehicle out of gear and sent it rolling backward. Max's driving skills are better than your average dog. Both Max and the truck emerged without a scratch.

Dog walks 70 miles through war zone

Their friendship began half way across the world in Iraq, when St. Petersburg native Major Brian Dennis encountered a mixed breed dog in Anbar Province. The dog had been savagely abused and his ears cut off. The marine decided to call him Nubbs. Major Dennis nursed Nubbs back to health ... and here is where this friendship takes a remarkable turn: Major Dennis was ordered to move his squadron 70 miles away. He complied.

Two days later he was out there working on a vehicle in the front yard and all of a sudden along came Nubbs. He had tracked Brian 70 miles across the desert in 18 degree temperatures.
Despite strict rules, Major Dennis wrote to his mother, he had to help this dog. "I won't even address the gauntlet. He had to run off a pack of dogs, wolves and god knows what else to get here ... when he arrived he looked like he had been through a war zone," Dennis wrote. Weeks went by, and Nubbs was dealt another blow, someone told on them that they had the dog and they had 4 days to get rid of him or Nubbs was going to be shot.

That’s when the Marine made it his mission to get Nubbs to safety. He wrote, “Nubbs was going to America, this dog had been through a lifetime of fighting war, abuse, and had tracked our team over 70 miles of harsh desert (and) was going to live the good life. The hardest part was getting him across the Jordanian border,” Cargo said. But, in keeping with the rest of this story, the duo defied the odds. Major Dennis was able to get Nubbs into Jordan. A family in the US will take care of him until these friends can be reunited. There's a photo gallery here.
