Laughing quads are marking a decade of mischief

The Mathias quads still laugh a lot. Not in perfect unison, but with the undeniable joy of youngsters in a house full of love and animals and look-alike siblings who hatch mischief together.
The identical quadruplets, who giggled their way into the hearts of millions as babies on "America's Funniest Home Videos," are about to turn 10 (on Feb. 16).
.
.
The famous video featured the four babies sprawled in bed around their mother, Allison, and cackling at the funny faces made by the man behind the camera, dad Steve. Years later, people still can't get enough of it. One YouTube version has received nearly a million hits in the past year alone.

Tattoo cat came back: 14 years later to its family

Fourteen years ago, the Kerger family's three-year-old orange tabby wandered away from their Lockport-area house.
Last week, she arrived at their new home in Winnipeg.
"We thought a fox got her," Ingrid Kerger said Monday. "She just disappeared. We put up posters but she was never returned."
The cat spent time both indoors and out. She was a wanderer, says Kerger.
The family has no idea how the cat spent her 14 years on the lam.
"If only she could talk, what a story," laughs Kerger.
Tiger Lily didn't track the Kergers down on her own, she had considerable help.
Ingrid Kerger made sure her cat was spayed and had an ear tattoo. The cat was essentially carrying ID.
That didn't help her get reunited with her family, not in 1996 and not after they moved to Winnipeg. The happy ending required the kindness of strangers.
Last week, Kerger got a call from the Oakbank Animal Hospital. They wanted to know if she'd ever lived in Lockport. A staff member had found an elderly tabby and checked her tattoo. That led them to Kerger's old address.
They then tracked her down in Winnipeg.
"I was just in shock when they called."
She sent her 23-year-old son, Richard, to claim Tiger Lily. He carried a picture of boy and cat taken when he was eight.
The clinic rescued Tiger Lily, gave her IV therapy for dehydration and took care of her until the family could be found.
Since she's been home, Tiger Lily is eating everything in sight.

Man tattoos train logo for tickets

An Australian man said he obtained a pair of passes for his parents to ride a train across Europe by tattooing the transport company's logo on his back.
Grant Burton of Melbourne said he wanted to give his parents a trip to Germany for their 40th wedding anniversary so he contacted European rail company Eurail with his tattoo-for-tickets plan.
Burton said the company agreed to the exchange if he could attract 5,000 people to a Facebook group outlining the plan. He said the Internet portion was easy, and he now sports the Eurail logo across his back.
"I'm giving something back," Burton said of his gift to his parents. "They've done so much for me. Being a human billboard is a small price to pay."

World’s oldest conjoined twins

Extraordinary life ... Ronnie, left, and Donnie share a home in Dayton, Ohio

When Maureen Galyon gave birth in 1951, she had no idea she was expecting two babies - let alone conjoined twins.
The tots, joined at the torso, were not expected to survive the night as baffled doctors tried to work out if they could be separated.
Now, at 57, Ronnie and Donnie are the world’s oldest conjoined twins and have amazed the medic world by hanging onto life for so long.
And, as their health declines and they near their dying days, the pair have opened their doors to a documentary team to reveal the secrets of their extraordinary life together.
Although every day is a struggle as the men have to coordinate the simplest of tasks, they have a close, loving relationship and are able to live together in their own home in Dayton, Ohio.
The affectionate documentary, Extraordinary People: The World’s Oldest Conjoined Twins on Five on March 18 at 9pm, will bring hope to British mum Lisa Chamberlain who is expecting conjoined twins as it shows it is possible for the babies to not only survive but to live a happy life.

What's a father to do?

My daughter racked up 14,528 text messages in one month
Greg Hardesty of Silverado Canyon, Calif is more than speechless. He's textless. The PDF version of his family's cellular bill from Nov. 27 to Dec. 26, totaled 440 pages. Although three people are on the bill, his 13-year-old daughter Reina, right, alone racked up 14,528 text messages.
Thank God she's too young to drive.
I'm no math whiz, but I did some quick calculations on Reina's thumb-numbing total.
Assuming my daughter slept an average of eight hours during the billing period (she usually sleeps more), that works out to 484 text messages a day — or a text message every two minutes she was awake.
Could AT&T have made some mistake?
Wishful thinking. It's all true, based on the PDF file I reviewed.
One small consolation: The 14,528 total includes text messages both sent and received.

It's a baby, not kidney stone!

A Canadian woman did not know she was pregnant till she delivered a healthy seven-pound baby boy. Thirty-six-year-old Juanita Stead, a native of Newfoundland province, went to hospital with sharp lower back pain, thinking she had kidney stones.
On her X-ray examination, doctors found no signs of kidney stones. Instead she was told that she is pregnant and about to deliver a baby.
"It's no kidney stone. You've got a baby ready to be born,'' doctors told the shocked woman.
"No, that can't happen. You had the wrong X-ray file,'' she said in protest.
But in the next six minutes, she delivered a healthy seven-pound, 12-ounce boy born - at 12:31 a.m. local time on New Year's Day.
Named Nicholas, the boy has become one among the first Canadian babies born in the New Year. Her husband Terry said, Honest to God, I just don't have words to explain it.''
The woman said she never experienced any pregnancy-related symptoms such as morning sickness, kicking in her womb or anything else.

“Oh Boy”, what a baby

Doctors at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, Calif. couldn't believe their eyes when they delivered - 14-pound, 2-ounce Richard Walker Sault

"Oh my God!" a nurse gasped.
For a second, mom Sara thought something might be wrong.
But her bundle of joy was perfectly healthy when he came into the world on Dec. 23.

"We thought our first baby was a miracle, and now we have this little guy," dad Richard Sault said "Guess he's not so little."

Couple Gives Birth to Black and White Twins, Again

Black and white twins Hayleigh and Lauren Durrant proudly hold their new sisters Leah and Miya — who incredibly are ALSO twins with different colored skin.
Their mixed-race parents Dean Durrant and Alison Spooner repeated the two-tone miracle after a seven-year gap.

Ebony and Ivory ... Alison and Dean Durrant with two sets of twins - Hayleigh and Leah on left, and Lauren holding Miya
When the first set of twins arrived in 2001, the couple were astonished to see that Lauren took after her white mom, with blue eyes and red hair, while Hayleigh had black skin and hair like dad Dean.
Then this year Alison, 27, found she was expecting again — and lightning struck twice.
She had twin girls again. And little Miya was born with dark skin like her dad and Leah is white like former recruitment consultant Alison.

Dean, 33, of Fleet, Hants, said: "The girls just love Miya and Leah to bits."

Parents of nine girls finally have a son

Mother of nine girls, Sally Laycock of Welwyn Garden City, Herts, has the Christmas present she's always wanted - a baby boy. Mrs Laycock, 34, finally gave birth to tiny Lewis after her husband John quit his job as a chef after 20 years. After nine girls in a row, the couple had resigned themselves to being a totally female household.
Mrs Laycock, 34, finally gave birth to tiny Lewis after her husband John quit his job as a chef after 20 years.
After nine girls in a row, the couple had resigned themselves to being a totally female household.
But as soon as John, 37, retired after two decades in hot kitchens, delighted Mrs Laycock fell pregnant with a boy.
"I'm so excited to have a boy at last," said Sally, who has been pregnant for ten of the last 17 years."
She said that she had been told that the hot conditions in which Mr Laycock used to work could have been to blame for the couple's failure to give birth to a boy.
However, she did not believe temperature had played a part until he gave up work and she became pregnant with a boy.
Mr Laycock, of Welwyn Garden City, Herts, said: "I had to give up my job because I had two heart attacks in the space of six months and couldn't work.
"It was a hard time for us, as we're such a big family.
"But it's finally brought us a boy. We're all so excited."
The family of 12 are having an extra-special Christmas to celebrate, despite the worry of having another hungry mouth to feed.
Family and friends are buying plenty of boy's toys as presents after years of stocking up on dolls, clothes and make-up.
Baby Lewis was born a healthy 7lb 12oz on December 9.
The family are coming to terms with having a boy in the already busy household.
Mr Laycock said: "We've got a bit of planning to do because we've only got four bedrooms.
"Now we have a boy it's going to be difficult.
"I've even started building a shed in the garden to make extra space for the older girls."
The couple cope with their brood, aged two to 17, by running a military like operation each morning and bedtime, with the oldest girls helping the younger ones.
Each week they run up a £200 shopping bill and get through two loaves of bread just for breakfast.

The world’s tallest snowman 122-ft isn’t a man at all it's a woman.

With skis for eyelashes and red-painted tires for lips, she is a whole-lot-of-woman.

Maine creators named their snowwoman "Olympia" after their Senator who is ironically named Olympia Snowe.
Olympia knocked "Angus, King of the Mountain," the record holder since 1999, right out of the park. The 1999 record holder was named for Angus King, who was governor in Maine at the time, but Angus isn’t King anymore.
Olympia’s creators made her arms out of pine trees and she too has her share of glitz and glamour as a giant snowflake pendant, more than six feet in diameter, hangs from her neck.
This ice princess will be around for a while; she isn’t expected to melt until May.
