Children use pet dogs to cheat on pedometer study

Children taking part in a study to measure how much exercise they do fooled researchers by attaching their pedometers to their pet dogs.
About 200 children in east London were given pedometers to automatically count how many steps they walked and ran.
Mile End Center for Sports and Exercise Medicine was surprised by the activity levels recorded in some obese children.
Professor Nicola Maffulli said: "Then we realised they were attaching the pedometers to their dogs' collars."
'Extremely active'
The pilot study in Whitechapel required 11 and 12-year-olds to clip a pedometer to their waists, with researchers at the center collecting the readings by satellite.
"But after a week we found there were some kids who were extremely active but still obese," said Professor Maffulli.
It was "not unheard of" for participants in previous studies to manipulate the readings of pedometers, he added.
Once adjusted to take into account the help from pets, the study indicated that boys in the borough walk or run 12,620 steps a day, below the recommended level of 15,000 steps.
It also found that girls take 10,150 steps, falling short of the recommended 12,000 steps.
It indicated that more than a third of 11 and 12-year-olds in the borough of Tower Hamlets are overweight or obese - 11% higher than the national average.

The president of Canon Electronics, Hisashi Sakamaki, is also the author of a book proposing some of the same measures he takes with his own company. His theory is that forcing employees to stand not only saves money but increases productivity and enhances employee relationships.
In the hallway, if an employee walks slower than 5 meters every 3.6 seconds, an alarm and flashing lights are set off, reminding the poor startled worker that he's an inefficient waste of air. Even better (or worse), there's a sign on the floor in said hallways that reads, "Let's rush: If we don't, the company and world will perish." The big boss, as a reward for thinking up all this stuff, gets to lounge in a nice, relaxing chair.

15,000 km on foot from Miami to Ushuaia

Laetitia and Guillaume, a young French couple aged 23 and 26 set out from Miami on 27 September 2008, with the objective of getting to Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego entirely on foot and with just 1 euro a day.

Maine creators named their snowwoman "Olympia" after their Senator who is ironically named Olympia Snowe.

Olympia knocked "Angus, King of the Mountain," the record holder since 1999, right out of the park.The 1999 record holder was named for Angus King, who was governor in Maine at the time, but Angus isn’t King anymore.

Olympia’s creators made her arms out of pine trees and she too has her share of glitz and glamour as a giant snowflake pendant, more than six feet in diameter, hangs from her neck.

This ice princess will be around for a while; she isn’t expected to melt until May.
