FBI: Prodigiously decorated California man never served in military
NOVEMBER 11--Just in time for Veteran's Day, a California bank employee is facing federal charges for allegedly masquerading as a decorated Marine and wearing a host of bogus medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Navy Cross. Steven Burton, 39, is scheduled to surrender tomorrow in U.S. District Court in Riverside, California (Burton, who has never served in the armed forces, was named last week in misdemeanor criminal information charging him with the unauthorized wearing of military medals). According to a search warrant affidavit, Burton's charade was discovered after an actual Navy commander, Colleen Salonga, ran into Burton at their high school reunion. Online records indicate that Salonga and Burton graduated in 1988 from Alhambra High School in Martinez, California (and that their class's 20th reunion was last October). Suspicious that Burton was playing dress up, Salonga asked to take a photo with him. That image was later provided to FBI agents. A subsequent investigation turned up another photo of Burton in uniform as well as blog postings in which he recounted his "combat experience" and tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the real world, Burton is employed at Rabobank in Palm Springs, California.

'Pay €10 and then you will get your lost purse back.'

A young girl who lost her purse on a Ryanair flight, was shocked when she was forced to pay €10 for its return.
Emma Lally, nine, misplaced her purse while buying presents on a flight home to Dublin from Spain.
Although her father Sean Lally was able to track down the purse after a series of phone calls to Dublin Airport, Emma was left in tears after being told she must pay €10 (£8.50) to reclaim it.
Ryanair uses lost property provider Greencap, which charges a €10 administrative fee.
Dublin Airport Authority charges €6 to reclaim lost items.
Mr Lally was grateful that Ryanair staff had handed in his daughter's purse but is still fuming over the charge, particularly when it involved a child.
'I was a bit annoyed that I had to pay back money for something that was ours,' Mr Lally told the Belfast Telegraph.
'I was delighted to get it back, but she's only a child.'
Emma had written her personal details inside the purse, which contained €42 in cash which she had saved from her holiday spending money.
Mr Lally said: 'Her name and address were written inside the purse in a child's handwriting. It was very obvious that it was a child's purse. She's a good kid and she went away and had a little think about it, and came to me and said she wanted to give me the money. 'Emma was delighted to get it back but she couldn't believe that she had to pay the money. I don't see why it can't be given back without a charge.'

Grinch that Stole a Family Christmas

A CRUEL thief who broke into a Woree family's home and stole all their Christmas presents left three children Brooke, Tyreece and Skye Thompson were heartbroken to find all their presents gone.
Kate Baker came home from Christmas party with friends about 10pm on Sunday to find her children and young grandchildren sobbing and inconsolable over the mean-spirited crime.
The shock triggered a heart attack that led to the single mother being rushed to Cairns Base Hospital that night, before being released yesterday afternoon.
Just three days out from Christmas, the family now has to come up with the cash to buy all the presents again.
Ms Baker said although the total value of about 10 stolen gifts would have been about $1000 … including a gold watch with a dragon on the face, a fairy statue and two gift packs of Hilary Duff perfume … it was the fact someone could commit such a low act on her family that hurt the most.
"It’s not how much it cost me, even though I’m a single parent and work six days a week so I work pretty hard for it," Ms Baker said.
"It’s the fact that my three little grandkids have been adding to the pile each day, getting more excited every day and counting down the sleeps.
"Then to walk in and see it all gone, to see their little faces, it’s not fair.
"Who would do that?"
The presents were stolen when Ms Baker’s son Odin, 15, popped next door to his older sister Nicole Ryan’s house for dinner about 9.20pm for 20 minutes, leaving the house unoccupied but forgetting to lock the front door.
The teen yesterday said he kept thinking about what he would have done if he’d returned in time to catch the thieves.
"I wish I had. I would have done whatever it took to stop them," he said.
The family reported the thefts to police and door-knocked their Toogood Rd neighbors on Sunday night, but said so far nobody had reported seeing the thieves.
A small consolation came when the largest of the Christmas parcels, containing a battery-operated children’s car, was found in a rubbish bin across the road where it had obviously been discarded.
Other Christmas gifts that were not theirs were also found in the bin.
"It seems somewhere along the line they’ve done the same thing to a couple of other houses," Ms Baker said.

The St. Lucie County School Board voted unanimously to suspend an elementary school teacher without pay for one year after she let kindergarteners vote on whether 5-year-old Alex Barton could remain in class.
Alex, in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, had left the class twice that day for discipline referrals to the principal’s office.
The teacher brought Alex to the front of the classroom and asked students to tell him how his behavior affected them.
After classmates talked, the teacher asked the class to vote on whether Alex should stay in the class.
Alex lost the vote, 14 to 2.
Maybe the teacher is watching too many reality shows.

It has been claimed that the little girl who starred at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony was miming and was only put on stage because the real singer wasn't considered attractive enough. Ceremony musical director Chen Qigang says pigtailed Lin Miaoke was selected to appear because of her cute appearance and hadn't sung a note of the emotional song Ode to the Motherland. Photographs of Lin in a bright red party dress were published in newspapers and websites all over the world and the official China Daily hailed her as a rising star on Tuesday. But Chen says the girl whose voice was actually heard by the 91,000 capacity crowd at the main Olympic stadium was in fact seven-year-old Yang Peiyi, who has a chubby face and uneven teeth.

Woman was fired after shaving head for cancer charity

When she took part in a local fundraiser for cancer research, all Stacey Fearnall thought she had to lose was a full head of hair.
Instead, the 36-year-old waitress at Nathaniels restaurant in Owen Sound, Ontario, who raised more than $2,700 for the charity Cops for Cancer in exchange for her locks, was laid off when she showed up for work earlier this week with a shorn head.
The mother of two, was told by her boss to go home after she refused to wear a wig.

A BLIND man was stranded miles from home after being prevented from boarding a train – because his guide dog "might have fleas".

Mark McClenaghan (pictured above), who was unable to board the sleeper from Aberdeen to Edinburgh with his dog Friday, wants an apology and compensation from rail bosses. He had to catch a later train to Perth on Tuesday evening, and then pay out £95 for a taxi to his home in Dalry. First Scotrail is investigating his complaint. The firm says it has clear guidelines for staff and guide dogs are welcome on all trains.

Landlord demands family pay rent for deceased daughter

The family of a Liverpool student who died in January has been threatened with legal action over rent on her digs. The parents of Shauna McCann said the letting agents, Wavertree-based Bpm Services Ltd, had caused them “undue stress and worry.”
Shauna was in her final year of a special needs teaching degree at Hope University when she died aged 19 of natural causes on January 29. The teenager, from Bessbrook, in Newry, Northern Ireland, had rented a house with three girls in Carsdale Road, Mossley Hill.
Despite the tragedy, Bpm is demanding her father Kevin pay monthly amounts of £216.67 until June as he “agreed to guarantee his daughter’s rent payments in full for the whole of the period of the tenancy.”

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that legal action will be taken to recover any unpaid rent, as agreed by both Miss McCann and Mr McCann (as guarantor) on the tenancy agreement.”
Bpm denied being unsympathetic and said it had “offered Mr McCann the opportunity to spread the burden of the payments over as many months as his budget permits.” Shauna’s family said: “We are trying to the best of our ability to come to terms with the loss of our precious daughter. This whole issue has caused us undue stress and worry.”

237 dogs removed from Texas woman's home

Animal control officers removed 237 dogs from the home of a 70-year-old woman who said she had been breeding the animals, officials said.
Kelli Copeland, manager of the city's Animal Care Services department, said it took about six hours Tuesday to gather up all the dogs, which were taken to a city kennel. Most of the dogs were Pomeranians, but there were also Yorkshire terriers, two standard poodles and several other breeds. Copeland said they appeared to be suffering from the close quarters.

"They had plenty of food and plenty of water but were not living in healthy conditions," Copeland said. "Many were covered in feces and urine. I think she slowly accumulated them to where they were more than she could handle."One of the dogs was euthanized because of its poor condition. The woman claimed that dog had recently wandered to the house. "The homeowner is a very nice lady; I think she loved her dogs," Copeland said.

Girl gets detention for hugging
Illinois middle school bans public displays of affection

MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter.
The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.
“I feel it is crazy,” said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.
“I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend,” she said.
Megan’s mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren’t even real hugs — just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.
“It’s hilarious to the point of ridicule,” Coulter said. “I’m still dumbfounded that she’s having to do this.”
District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.
It states: “Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.”
Parents urge change in policy Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.
“We don’t agree with it, but I certainly don’t want her to get in more trouble,” Coulter said.
The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.
“I’m just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn’t be punishing us for hugs,” Megan said.

Man cuts down 122 trees to get sea view

A German pensioner has cut down dozens of trees to get a better view of the Baltic Sea from his coastal home. Officials are calling him a Grinch Who Stole the Forest and want to prosecute him. Neighbors, though, are asking what all the fuss is about.
Unhappy with the obscured view at his property near the Baltic Sea coast, the man struck back at nature - with a chainsaw. Police reported that the 80-year-old man admitted to having illegally cut down 122 trees because they obstructed his view of the coast at his vacation home in an expensive part of the town of Scharbeutz near Lübeck in northern Germany.
The police investigating the crime said the tops had been cut off of 66 beech, ash, oak and wild cherry trees and that an additional 55 had been sawed to the ground completely. All of the trees were over 30 years old. The local forestry office is estimating damages at €15,000 ($22,000).Meanwhile, prosecutors are exploring their options for charging the man for property damage and violating both state and federal nature conservation laws. However, some local neighbors have come his defense "Maybe he got a bit carried away with 120 trees," said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous. "But what's all the fuss about?"

Dumb Criminal Minds

One thing that’s always been funny to me is how dumb some criminals are. I am by no means advocating crime but if you are going to be a criminal, why wouldn’t you do something only if it was worth your while? Far too many people go to jail over meaningless criminal acts such as stealing $70 from a cash register. Mr. Criminal, you’ve got to be kidding me. You’re going to risk jail time with Bubba, sacrifice all the time you could have been working (making a lot more than what you stole), and limiting future career options for a whopping $70? Maybe you deserve to be in jail.
