Dubai unveils plans for tallest tower - one kilometer high 3,281 feet

Dubai, emirate of extravagance and superlatives, laid claim to an extraordinary new record yesterday with a multi billion dollar plan to build the world's tallest tower in the face of deepening global financial gloom.
The tower, at the center of the Nakheel port and harbor complex, is to be "over one kilometer" high and have more than 200 floors, beating its nearest rival, the existing Burj Dubai tower, still under construction and due to rise to a mere 818 meters."At more than a kilometer high this is an unbelievably ground breaking design," boasted Chris O'Donnell, Nakheel's Australian CEO. "We are pushing the boundaries of sustainable design."
The complex will provide homes and offices for 100,000 people. If all the reinforcing bars were laid end to end they would stretch from Dubai to New York - one quarter of the way round the world.
The tower will be so tall that it will have five different micro-climates. The temperature in the atmosphere at the top of the building could be as much as 10 degrees cooler than at the bottom. High-speed lifts will allow people to see the sunset twice - from the bottom and again from the top of the building.

Monkey Waiters

The local hangout just north of Tokyo employs a pair of Japanese monkeys called Yat-chan and Fuku-chan to serve their customers.
The younger of the two, Fuku-chan, usually begins the first shift and is quick to hand out customers a hot towel to help them clean their hands before they order their first drinks.
Fuku-chan, who is four, has two years experience under his furry belt and his work load is limited to hot towels.
Both monkeys are well appreciated by customers who tip them with boiled soya-beans to enjoy during their down time.

Dog pulls 1-year-old baby to safety

A family in near Paducah, Kentucky lost everything they own in a house fire this week but they are thankful that everyone got out alive. That may not have happened had it not been for one "four-legged" member of the family. Jason Breiding was cooking when he says a grease fire started. At first it didn't seem too bad, so he tried to contain it. "I was trying to do anything I could to put it out, that's what was going through my mind," he said. And while Jason battled to save his home, his wife Heather grabbed their three month old son and made it outside. He assumed their 1-year-old daughter Samara was with them.
But, turns out the little girl was with another member of the family. "He grabbed the back of the diaper with his teeth going through the diaper and didn't even touch her, and pulled her into the living room," said Jason.
Jason scooped up Samara and then holding his daughter tight, watched as their home burned. Nothing was able to be saved, but Jason has his wife, and two kids and a dog, he's says he's indebted to. He's already got his kids names tattooed on his body, and says the family pet might be next. "I wasn't gonna but I think I will, he's a part of the family now," said Jason.

Starbucks wasting 6 million gallons of water a day

A U.K. newspaper is reporting that coffee-giant Starbucks wastes about 6 million gallons of water each day because stores are told to keep water running in their sinks. The water is kept running as part of a company policy to keep utensils clean and wash away food. It’s enough daily water "for the entire 2 million strong population of drought-hit Nambia in Africa or fill an Olympic pool every 83 minutes." The investigation started after it was tipped off by an employee and then a letter was sent to Starbucks confirming the policy to keep running water constantly into dipper wells. The practice is done in both American and U.K. Starbucks stores to maintain health standards.

This is an Incredible Story

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University .
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air.
The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it.
As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.
The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments.
Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled.
Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.
Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Brookfield Zoo with his teenaged son.
As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and
walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing.
The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down.
The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant.
Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, and wrapped its trunk around Peter.

What zoo would permit a stranger to walk into an African elephant enclosure?

7 Stupid Online Security Mistakes You're Probably Making

A new study National Cyber Security Alliance says that you're probably making one of these 7 stupid mistakes when it comes to your own online security. The study shows that when Symantec, polled 3,000 online users and scanned the computers of 400 of them, 81 percent of respondents said they were using a firewall, but only 42 percent indeed had a firewall installed on their computer. Whoops.
Consumer Reports posted a list of 7 common online security mistakes that you might be making — and assuming you were protected was #1. Now, we know our readers aren't making these mistakes because they are so responsible and awesome, but maybe you have a family member who keeps sending money to Nigeria and wondering why Bank of America keeps emailing when they don't have an account. Maybe you could send this their way?

7. Shopping online like you do in stores.
Avoid using a debit card and always look for the "https" in the website's address. You can get a virtual account number from your credit-card company. It’s good for only one purchase from a specific vendor.
6. Clicking on a pop-up that tells you your PC is secure.
CR's survey showed "that 13 percent of respondents who saw such a pop-up tried to close it but launched it instead; 3 percent clicked on a pop-up and got a malware infection." Block pop-ups and/or be very careful to click the X, not the ad.
5. Thinking your Mac protects you from everything.
Mac users fall prey to phishing scams at about the same rate as Windows users, says CR.
4. Downloading Free Software.
"Fish-tank screen savers and smiley faces" are the enemy of everything good in the world. Download software from reputable sites (Download.com), and check out our sister site Lifehacker to see if they have any recommendations.
3. Using one password for everything.
Dumb! Here's some advice for creating and managing good passwords.
2. Accessing your account through email links.
Don't do this. Don't. Please stop. Stop! CR says: No matter how official an e-mail message looks, trying to access a financial account by clicking on embedded Web links is risky. If the e-mail message is fraudulent, a cybercriminal could use the account number and password you enter to steal your identity or empty your bank account.
1. Assuming your security software is working.
CR says: "Renew the subscription when the software prompts you. Make sure your security software is active when you’re online and that it has been updated within the past week or so."
